Humidity can have a dramatic effect on the hair, causing frizziness, limpness, and generally unmanageable hair (otherwise known as “bad hair days”). The bad news is that the recent hot, humid days of summer draw out the worst in our hair. The good news is that there is plenty you can do about it! Start with a good haircut that enhances the natural beauty of your hair. A haircut that plays to the advantages of your hair is likely to fair better in unfair weather than one which attempts to make your hair into something it isn’t. Consult with one of our stylists for more information about what summer cut is right for you. Products with anti humectants can often fight against the effects of humidity, and are available in quality hair care lines. A humectant is essentially a moisturizer, so an anti humectant is the opposite, and battles the effects of humidity on the hair. Salon 113 sells products with anti humectants in them; simply stop in or call about what products are right for you! |

Summer is prime season for damage to colored hair, but there are steps you can take to minimize the damage that fun in the sun causes to your hair color. Sunshine itself tends to fade hair color, so you can use any number of hair care products with UV protectants. This month’s Product of the Month, Redken UV Rescue Protective Oil, is one such product. The same products used to keep swimming pools clean and sanitary can do a lot of damage to colored hair; they can, for instance, turn blonde hair green. Swimmers should always wet their hair before swimming and apply a leave-in conditioner such as Wella Color Preserve. A swimming cap is recommended. Other recommended products are Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner and Redken UV Rescue Blonde Guard. Salon 113 sells all of the products listed here, and it is always a good idea to consult with your hair stylist for individual questions and concerns, so make an appointment today! |

Chances are your hair is, indeed, growing. What might be happening is you’re not getting your haircut regularly enough. When people grow their hair out, they often think that they simply don’t need to get their hair cut; however, when you don’t get your hair cut regularly, the ends become damaged and split and break off, preventing your hair from getting longer. This can be prevented by getting your hair cut on a longer, but still regular, basis. Our recommendation is that you get your hair trimmed during the “grow-out” period every six to eight weeks. Some products may be able to help during this period. Redken All Soft Shampoo, Conditioner, and Treatments will gently smooth the hair. Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave-in Treatment will reduce friction from brushing and help fortify hair that is prone to breaking, splitting, or snapping off. If you follow these directions, you will notice a drastic improvement in hair growth in just a few short weeks. For more information, visit your stylist at Salon 113! |

[Thank you to Anne and Mary Ann from Holley, NY for this week’s question.] Hair loss could be the result of numerous issues such as stress, diet, or other health-related problems, so your first course of action should be to see your physician. Since stress and diet can have a dramatic impact on your hair’s health, you should aim to improve your quality of life in both areas. Exercise is recommended by virtually every health care professional to reduce the negative effects of stress, as is getting plenty of rest. Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber, fruits and vegetables. Taking care of yourself on the inside is sure to help your health on the outside. Of course there are expensive therapies and treatments, such as hair transplants, that you can explore. Many have found success using various hair care products such as those made by Nioxin and sold at Salon 113. Nioxin products promote healthy hair growth, give nourishment to the scalp, and improve the structure and strength of your hair. |

Dry, brittle nails are common. Causes vary and can include both medical and environmental contributors. Nutritional and vitamin deficiencies may cause the nails to dry, as will several health conditions, but so could extended or repeated use of detergents and hot water. Autumn and winter, with colder weather and dry indoor heat could also become a factor. As with last week’s question about hair loss, it is always wise to consult your physician if you notice any change in the health of your nails.
Many have noticed improvement in nail health with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, protein, nuts, and whole grains. Solar Oil by Creative Nail Design and many Nail Tek products—both sold at Salon 113—can help. Such products are usually applied daily and help to replenish natural moisture, soften and maintain healthy cuticles, and provide extra conditioning and vitamin enrichment. They help to improve the flexibility of natural nails, making them smoother and less brittle.
Salon 113’s newest service is nail care, and we invite you to call our Nail Technician, Danielle, to schedule an appointment for a manicure, pedicure, or paraffin wax treatment. During your visit, be sure to get all of your nail care questions answered! |

This is a great question with several answers. First, everyone wants her/his hair to look good, but hair is not just about beauty; frequently, changes in your hair are early warning signs for changes in your health. It makes sense to attend to the needs of your hair and to consult with professionals when caring for it. Stylists are licensed professionals trained to provide advice about hair care products, and their salons carry the best products available.
However, we all know that hair is about beauty, as well, and the old adage, “you get what you pay for” applies here as well as it does anywhere else. Hair care products sold in grocery stores and drug stores are often of inferior quality, even if they carry the same brand name. An investigative report by an ABC News affiliate in Southern Florida in 2004 uncovered several reasons why it may not be safe to trust the products in such stores. You can receive more information about this report by clicking on this sentence.
Buying your hair care products at your salon ensures that you are receiving the best products. When you leave the salon after having a service performed, you want that look to continue. Buying the right hair care products from your salon after consulting with your stylist helps to achieve that look. There is a web page with some useful tips with regard to buying professional hair care products. You can read it by clicking on this sentence. |

It’s all about the cuticle. Most of us have heard about hair follicles, the opening in the skin from which the hair grows, but many don’t know that hair has cuticles, just as fingernails and toenails do. Cuticles form the outer layer of each hair, overlapping each other tightly to form a protective seal. In order to work correctly, these cuticles need a proper balance of water, protein, and natural oils. Light reflected from healthy cuticles is what gives our hair its healthy, shiny appearance. Our bodies usually produce sufficient oils and protein; dry, frizzy hair, therefore, is usually caused by a lack of moisture. People with curly hair, treated hair, or who live in hot and sunny climates are especially at risk for losing moisture in their hair.
Products that contain a mixture of materials which work with the hair’s natural ability to retain moisture can help to restore or to maintain natural shine and balance. Some people have found conditioners with wheat, rice, or corn to be helpful in improving damaged cuticles and increasing the elasticity of their hair. Salon 113 recommends Redken’s All-Soft shampoo and conditioner, which contains proteins, amino acids, and avocado oil. If you have frizzy hair, you’re in luck, because Redken’s All-Soft shampoo and conditioner happen to be this month’s Product of the Month!
As always, though, the best idea is to make an appointment with your favorite Salon 113 stylist and ask! |

No.
Okay, we might be able to expand that answer a little bit. Although the change in seasons may affect the way we care for our hair (see August 7’s Question of the Week, for example), you shouldn’t choose your hair color based upon the season. Your skin tone, your eye color, even your personality are all more important factors than what’s happening with the weather outside. Stay with the color that suits you best.
How to care for your hair, especially colored hair, during the changing seasons presents a different question. Obviously, with less exposure to the sun, your hair will not need the same level of protection against damaging UV rays in the Fall or Winter. However, more time indoors with dry heat may indicate more need for conditioners and other products that help to lock in moisture (see last week’s question). Your Salon 113 stylist can help you choose the products that are right for your hair.
One more note about hair color, for the do-it-yourselfers out there. There is a reason why almost all stylists recommend against home coloring kits, and there is more to it than just the self-serving reason that may come to mind. Take great care if you insist on trying, because it can be two to three times more expensive to have a stylist fix a bad coloring job than to do it right the first time! Choosing a hair color may not be not a science, but applying a color correctly actually involves both science and talent.
If you are interested in coloring your hair, now is the perfect time to get your hair colored at Salon 113 since you can get a manicure and/or pedicure for 50% off if you book both appointments before the end of the month! Call the salon for more details and to make your appointment today! |

Well, we suggest you look for Salon 113 of course, but we’re confident enough to encourage you to shop around! When looking at salons for your wedding, look for four things: experience, trial runs, a relaxed environment, and client satisfaction.
First, experience matters. This is a special day, so you will want to choose a salon and stylists who have prior wedding experience. Next, make sure that you have a trial run for your wedding...it’s essential! During trial runs, you determine whether you want your hair up or down, decorated or just styled, etc. Don’t be afraid to try more than one salon. Remember, your wedding doesn’t happen everyday: the trial run is not something to skimp on! During your trial run, check out the salon. Do you feel relaxed in the salon’s environment? On your wedding day, you will want do everything possible to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere. Will the salon be bustling with other clients?
So let’s say you’ve found a salon with experience. The trial run looks good, and you think you can relax in the atmosphere of the salon. Now it’s time to check references. Can the salon provide client feedback? Past success is a great indicator of future success. Ask the stylists, check out their website (if available), and ask around.
When you’re done shopping around, come on back and check out the Salon 113 Wedding. We’ve done hundreds of weddings, and our trial runs don’t end until you’re satisfied you’ve found the look you want. There are many myths and old wives tales about gray and graying hair. This one, as with most, is not true. When you pull out a hair, no matter the color, only one grows back. The origin of the myth probably dates back farther than written history. One gray hair is often the hallmark of many more to come as part of the body’s natural aging process.
Other myths about gray and graying hair:
· Gray hair is not thicker or more wiry than your natural hair. Your hair’s structure remains the same. As your body ages, it secretes less oil to the hair, causing all of your hair to become drier; this may be the source of this myth. · Gray hair is not easier to color. In fact, it may be color-resistant, in which case it would take a longer time for the color to “take.” · Although there are some documented cases of quick hair loss/graying, these cases seem to be related to a rare disease. Generally, then, hair does not turn gray or white overnight.
The simple fact is that graying hair is a part of getting older. As the body ages, it makes less and less pigment for the hair, causing it to turn gray first, then eventually white. Increasingly, people are embracing their graying hair. Luckily, for those who are not, there are stylists such as those at Salon 113 who can stave off the effects of time—at least for a while! |

Red hair color is the most difficult color to keep in, and it is the most difficult color to get out.
What we mean by that is that the vibrant red color you can achieve in the salon tends to fade quickly. Our stylists recommend using a shampoo and conditioner that helps to keep the color intact and vibrant for the longest possible time. Salon 113 sells a red-tinted product made by Goldwell, called Color Glow Stay Red Shampoo and Treatment. We also sell Redken’s Color Extend. Both products help to keep the color rich and beautiful.
The other side to the red hair color coin is that once you color your hair red, it is a difficult color to get out of your hair. Therefore, it is important to choose qualified and experienced hair stylists, such as those at Salon 113!
See you next week! |
